I’m a BIG Despicable Me fan and have been know to laugh for 5 minutes straight at something those little minion guys get up to. So when my boyfriend asked me to make him a Despicable Me cake for his birthday, I couldn’t wait to try it out!
Because the cake needed to be very tall to make the minion’s body, I decided to do a rainbow cake where each layer was a different colour. This was actually a lot easier than I thought – more time consuming than difficult. I made three batches of my go-to vanilla sponge, divided each batch in two and coloured and baked separately, resulting in 6 differently coloured sponge cakes. The main problem was during assembly.
After baking 3 rounds of sponge cakes, my kitchen was understandably very warm. My buttercream icing did not like this! As I started assembling the cakes, the weight of the next layer and the heat of the kitchen caused the tower of sponge to start to lean. It was a near disaster. There was a lot of screaming and panic and ‘I can’t do this’ but finally with a few extra helping hands we managed to stabilise the minion long enough to cover him in sugarpaste cement (or just sugarpaste but you get the idea!). Once he was standing on his own two feet (dammit I forgot to give him feet!), he was ready to be dressed and meet his hungry audience!
